We review the recent progress of silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells. Recently, a new efficiency world record for silicon solar cells of 26.7% has been set by Kaneka Corp. using this technology. This was mainly achieved by remarkably increasing the fill-factor (FF) to 84.9% - the highest FF published for a silicon solar cell to date.
Heterojunction solar cells (HJT), variously known as Silicon heterojunctions (SHJ) or Heterojunction with Intrinsic Thin Layer (HIT), are a family of photovoltaic cell technologies based on a heterojunction formed between semiconductors with dissimilar band gaps.
They are a hybrid technology, combining aspects of conventional crystalline solar cells with thin-film solar cells. Silicon heterojunction-based solar panels are commercially mass-produced for residential and utility markets.
Heterojunction technology is currently a hot topic actively discussed in the silicon PV community. Hevel recently became one of the first companies to adopt its old micromorph module line for manufacturing high-efficiency silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells and modules.
The application of silicon heterojunction solar cells for ultra-high efficiency perovskite/c-Si and III-V/c-Si tandem devices is also reviewed.
