Mehdi Leilaeioun William Weigand Silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cell device structures use carrier-selective contacts that enable efficient collection of majority carriers while impeding the collection of minority carriers. However, these contacts can also be a source of resistive losses that degrade the performance of the solar cell.
This perspective focuses on the latter PC technology, more commonly known as silicon heterojunction (SHJ) technology, which achieved the highest power conversion efficiency to date for a single-junction c-Si solar cell. Moreover, the SHJ technology has been utilized in realizing world record perovskite/c-Si tandem solar cells.
To improve silicon heterojunction solar cells even further, minimizing transport losses within the charge carrier selective junctions and layers is mandatory.
Among PC technologies, amorphous silicon-based silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells have established the world record power conversion efficiency for single-junction c-Si PV. Due to their excellent performance and simple design, they are also the preferred bottom cell technology for perovskite/silicon tandems.
In the first design version of these solar cells, the heterojunction was formed by using the flat n-type crystalline silicon wafer with a thin layer of p-type amorphous hydrogenated silicon (a-Si:H) deposited on its surface . The efficiency of this structure reached 12.3%.
Jia Ge Silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells are increasingly attracting attention due to their low-temperature processing, lean steps, significant temperature coefficient, and their high bifacial capability. The high efficiency and thin wafer nature of SHJ solar cells make them ideal for use as high-efficiency solar cells.
