Capacitors are the energy reservoirs that supply bursts of power to maintain consistent operation during transient demands. To accurately measure capacitors, we use capacitance meters. The obvious extension of the resistance measurement to capacitors is to stimulate the capacitor under test with an AC source. In high-performance LCR meters, one technique used is to find the value of a capacitor does just that.
Depending on the sophistication of the meter, it may display the capacitance only, or it may also measure a number of other parameters such as leakage, equivalent series resistance (ESR), and inductance. For most purposes and in most cases the capacitor must be disconnected from circuit; ESR can usually be measured in circuit.
In contrast, an auto-ranging capacitance meter works by measuring the capacitance and then systematically stepping through the ranges to see which range is most relevant for the digital reading produced by its analog-to-digital converter for the sensed analog level.
