According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Yemen’s cumulative renewable capacity was 253 MW at the end of 2021, all from solar. Reports from local NGOs and the Ministry of Electricity and Energy put the country’s total installed solar capacity between 300 MW and 400 MW in 2018.
Yemen consumes approximately 4.133 billion kWh of energy (2007 estimate). The country is also looking into the development of wind power, although plans for the construction of a nuclear power generating facility have been shelved. Electrical production is 5.665 billion kWh.
According to the International Energy Agency, in 2000, oil made up 98.4% of the total primary energy supply in Yemen with the remainder comprising biofuels and waste (International Energy Agency). Natural gas and coal were introduced into the energy mix around 2008, and wind and solar energies were added around 2015.
Even before the conflict in 2015, most of Yemen’s population was deprived of basic electricity services. Yemen has the lowest electricity access rate in the Middle East and North Africa. The power obtained from the grid or off-grid sources is estimated to be 40 to 60% (MOEE).
