University of Birmingham researchers have demonstrated a method to upcycle end-of-life battery waste into materials that can be used for ‘next generation’ battery cathodes. The team used the recovered material from end-of-life EV batteries to synthesize compounds with a disordered rocksalt (DRX) structure.
Redwood is one of a number of companies trying to turn a supply of old batteries into materials for new ones. That’s low-hanging fruit, in the sense that it involves using up waste and could ease some of the pressure on new mines.
To ease the market’s growing pains, “recycling of lithium-ion batteries—getting that material back into the supply chain—is critical,” says Dave Howell, director of the DOE’s Vehicle Technologies Office. The DOE funded the new research as part of its massive effort to spur large-scale battery recycling innovations in the U.S.
Yan Wang, a materials science professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and co-author of the new study, started researching battery recycling 11 years ago.
