In this review, we briefly describe the fundamental principles of photocatalytic oxidation/reduction for air purification, including the phenomenon of mass transfer, the basic photocatalytic reaction mechanisms, and the photocatalytic degradation pathways of pollutants.
The development of practical photocatalytic air purification systems should require a holistic approach that integrates material design/preparation with diverse compositions, structures, and morphology; reaction condition optimization; reactor design and engineering; and hybridization with other technologies (Fig. 1).
This review begins with overviews of air pollution and traditional abatement technologies, and then advances in ambient air purification by nanotechnologies, including filtration, adsorption, photocatalysis, and ambient-temperature catalysis are presented—from fundamental principles to applications.
However, the photocatalytic air pollutant purification process is complicated and the applied research in this field is still limited. There are still major challenges that need to be further investigated.
The photocatalytic air purifier can effectively remove the atomized virus particles of the bacteriophage Phi-X 174. More than 99.999% of the viral RNA of SARS-CoV-2 is removed within 1 h, eliminating the infectivity of the virus. The air purifiers equipped with composite bead filters are ready for practical applications in homes and hospitals.
