Energy storage is a technical solution for decoupling electricity supply and demand, providing flexibility without compromise the overall system (Alves et al. 2019). By combining renewable energy and storage systems into hybrid energy approaches, it is possible to replace fossil electricity generation by approximately 100%.
The installed diesel power generation capacity on Graciosa Island is 4,610 kW which is provided by six diesel generators. Under the assumption of an average efficiency of 38.7 % the diesel consumption for electricity generation is approx. 3.7 million liters. On Graciosa Island, there are two fuel tanks with 75,000 l storage capacity each . 3.2.
The commercial and technical maturity of PHES technology provides a cost-effective solution for large scale energy storage (>100 MW) , bringing the estimated total installed capacity worldwide to 150 GW at the end of 2016, increased by approximately 6.4 GW in that year .
