EERE will continue to coordinate and collaborate with stakeholders in battery critical material supply chains to address the risks and capitalize on the opportunities identified in this and other reports.
This metal, used mainly as an active material in the cathode, increases battery life and energy density in batteries. It provides stability to the battery structure while it is being charged and discharged.
As a result of these developments, the transition to clean energy technologies is projected to drive demand for many raw critical minerals, such as lithium (Li), cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni), for lithium-ion batteries used in EVs.1 These critical materials are used to fabricate cathodes for lithium-ion batteries.
The results revealed that the key trends in the next 5–10 years related to battery materials will be declining lithium-ion prices and a transition to developing and utilizing newer cathode chemistries such as oxide cathodes (of nickel, cobalt, or manganese). Figure 2.
Research is being conducted to produce a cathode for high-density batteries using high-voltage and high-capacity active materials. This, combined with a novel gel electrolyte, would make it possible to obtain batteries with an extra-long life cycle and reduced costs. Another material traditionally used by industry is nickel, especially since the 1990s.
The mines and the miners often work in horrific conditions, with reports of child labor and poor safety standards. The Department of Energy also noted that cobalt poses the “highest material supply chain risk.” While these three are the most common, there are also other raw materials important for the EV supply chain.
