Pulse Discharge series capacitors in C0G dielectric exhibit no change in capacitance with respect to time and voltage and boast a negligible change in capacitance with reference to ambient temperature. These devices retain high insulation resistance with low dissipation factor at elevated temperatures up 200°C.
When defining current requirements for pulsed discharge capacitors, it is necessary to consider both the normal and fault condi-tions. If the fault current can be limited to about 10% of the shots and 3 times the nor-mal peak current, the normal conditions will drive the capacitor design.
Capacitors for use in pulsed discharge cir-cuits can be divided into two broad catego-ries. The first category is capacitors that use thin (5.5μm) aluminum foil electrodes to conduct current through the capacitors as shown in Figure 1.
The effect of voltage reversal on pulsed dis-charge capacitors is small below 20%, alt-hough some capacitors have been proven to be sensitive to reversals as low as 10%. The reversal of voltage in a capacitor is a voltage stress mechanism. Like voltage stress, it drives different failure modes.
