BRUSSELS, Nov 28 (Reuters) - France, Germany and Sweden called on the incoming European Commission on Thursday to ensure the future of battery production in Europe and avoid relying on China to meet its needs for the green transition.
New criteria requiring Chinese businesses to have factories in Europe and share technological knowhow will be introduced when Brussels invites bids for €1bn of grants to develop batteries in December, according to two senior EU officials. The pilot could be rolled out to other EU subsidy schemes, they said.
This strategic move is tailored to ensure seamless battery trade relations between China and the EU. It's pivotal to note China's overwhelming presence in the battery production landscape, holding a staggering 77% of the global market share.
Eleven out of 16 planned European-led battery factories have been delayed or canceled, according to a Bloomberg News analysis. Meanwhile, 10 of 13 projects in the region by Asian manufacturers such as China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. and South Korea’s Samsung SDI are on track.
The EU needs to cut red tape, speed up approval processes, create better routes to funding and markets for new companies in the sector and allocate more EU funding for the battery industry, they said.
In a paper released ahead of an EU ministers' meeting to discuss EU competitiveness on Thursday, the three EU members said European battery companies faced common challenges of scaling up in a global playing field that was not level.
