New energy storage, or energy storage using new technologies such as lithium-ion batteries, liquid flow batteries, compressed air and mechanical energy, is an important foundation for building a new power system in China, enjoying the advantages of quick response, flexible configuration and short construction periods.
According to NEA's Bian, the government has released a list of 56 new-type energy storage pilot demonstration projects since the beginning of this year, including 17 lithium-ion battery projects and 11 compressed air energy storage projects, among others.
Since 2023, a number of 300-megawatts-grade compressed air energy storage projects along with 100-megawatts-grade liquid flow battery projects begun construction. The new technologies including gravity storage, liquid air storage, carbon dioxide storage have been developed as well, according to the NEA.
According to the administration, the northern and northwestern parts of the country have seen the fastest development of new-type energy storage facilities, accounting for over 50 percent of the newly operational energy storage installations nationwide.
This marks the completion and operation of the largest grid-forming energy storage station in China. This energy storage station is one of the first batch of projects supporting the 100 GW large-scale wind and photovoltaic bases nationwide.
