Lightsource BP, one of the global leaders in the funding, development and long-term operation of solar projects, has become the first company in the UK to provide a reactive power service from a solar plant at night. Reactive power is the ability to maintain voltage levels on electricity transmission systems.
Solar panels primarily convert sunlight into electrical energy, raising questions about their night-time functionality. Technological advancements are investigating the nocturnal solar power capabilities. Understanding the limitations and exploring potential nighttime solutions is crucial for the future of solar energy.
Since solar farm inverters are not in use during the night, they are an under-used resource for National Grid ESO and local operators to tap into. Lightsource BP worked with Power Electronics to re-calibrate the inverters to take power from the grid and reflect it back to the grid in better condition.
Solar technology mainly uses sunlight for power, so at night, they don’t produce much electricity. This is because they need light to work well. Solar panels rely on sunlight to make electricity. When it’s dark, they don’t work because there’s no sunlight. Also, weather and where you live can affect how much power they make.
Yet, without the sun, they depend on stored energy or other methods to make electricity. Some solar panels can use infrared light to make a bit of electricity at night.
