When a lithium-ion battery fire breaks out, the damage can be extensive. These fires are not only intense, they are also long-lasting and potentially toxic. What causes these fires? Most electric vehicles humming along Australian roads are packed with lithium-ion batteries.
That’s due to additional cells rupturing due to fire and heat, releasing flammable vapor. While water or foam may appear to put out fires out quickly, lithium-ion fires can reignite as breached cells are met with oxygen. Keeping sprinklers running and moving batteries to safe burnout areas are recommended.
Importantly, the appropriate fire extinguishing method will vary depending on the type of lithium battery in question (such as lithium-ion, all-solid-state lithium-ion or lithium polymer). For standard lithium-ion battery fires, the sprinkling of fine water mist may be used to suppress the fire.
The onset and intensification of lithium-ion battery fires can be traced to multiple causes, including user behaviour such as improper charging or physical damage. Then there are even larger batteries, such as Megapacks, which are what recently caught fire at Bouldercombe. Megapacks are large lithium-based batteries, designed by Tesla.
It was developed by expert engineers at TÜV SÜD Global Risk Consultants who have helped large and small businesses manage their lithium-ion battery fire risks. It also comes from audience questions from our webinar: Reduce Your Risk of Lithium-Ion Battery Fires. Myth: Lithium-ion batteries are unsafe.
The casing rupture occurred in two forms, namely, a melting hole and a tearing crack, which inevitably caused TR propagation in the battery module and pack. The formation mechanism of the casing rupture was investigated by triggering TR in commercial cylindrical 21700 lithium-ion batteries.
