The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) is a unique example of a de facto state – having existed for almost 50 years and enjoying international recognition provided by over forty states. Nevertheless, it controls only one-fifth of the territory it claims rights to, while the rest of it lies within the Moroccan borders.
Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) – partially recognised state that claims sovereignty over the entire territory of Western Sahara, is a former Spanish colony. The SADR was proclaimed by the Polisario Front on February 27, 1976, in Bir Lehlou, Western Sahara. The SADR government controls about 20-25% of the territory it claims.

The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic is recognized by the African Union and, as of December 2022, by 47 U.N. member states, as well as another de facto state, South Ossetia.
