Does humidity affect capacitance of capacitors?

In this paper various capacitors are exposed to different levels of humidity. Under humid conditions, the capacitances of various capacitors vary due to the absorption of moisture. The effects of humidity are determined on the capacitance of various capacitors. A decrease in capacitances of various capacitors is observed.

What temperature should a capacitor be dried at?

To remove excess moisture, capacitors can be dried at 40 °C for 168 h (standard “dry box” conditions). For detailed recommendations, please refer to J-STD-033. Conformal coated series: 591D, 592D, 592W, 195D, 695D, 594D, 595D, 597D, T95, T96, T97, T98, 13008, and 14002.

What is the maximum voltage a capacitor can withstand?

According to standards IEC60068-2-67 and IEC6038-14, the limit that the capacitor can withstand under high temperature and high humidity is tested under 85°C/85% RH for reliability evaluation. Capacitors are tested at a voltage of at least 1.25 UR (where UR is the rated voltage) for endurance evaluation [ 25, 26 ].

How to test a capacitor?

The test samples are connected in parallel and placed in a constant temperature and humidity chamber, which is the same as in [ 16, 24 ]. According to standards IEC60068-2-67 and IEC6038-14, the limit that the capacitor can withstand under high temperature and high humidity is tested under 85°C/85% RH for reliability evaluation.

How does temperature and humidity affect K1 of a film capacitor?

TABLE 4. Capacitance loss parameters of film capacitor samples. k1 increases with the increasing temperature and humidity due to the acceleration of the electrochemical corrosion of electrodes and more sufficient moisture. The effects of temperature and humidity on k1 could be analysed by Peck's model [ 16 ].

What is the current reliability criterion of a film capacitor?

The current reliability criterion (RC) of the film capacitor (FC) is usually a fixed value, which does not consider the staged capacitance loss caused by moisture diffusion under high temperature and/or high humidity. The expected lifetime of capacitors would deviate far from the actual one.
