Brisbane-based Li-S Energy has developed a 20-layer battery cell utilizing semi-solid state lithium sulfur battery technology. The company claims the new cell displays nearly double the gravimetric energy density and a comparable volumetric energy density to lithium-ion cells.
Semi-solid lithium redox flow batteries (SSLRFBs) have gained significant attention in recent years as a promising large-scale energy storage solution due to their scalability, and independent control of power and energy. SSLRFBs combine the advantages of flow batteries and lithium-ion batteries which own high energy density and safety.
Li-S Energy has been working with Victoria’s Deakin University and PPK Group, among others, to develop the new battery cells, which eliminate the heavy metals like nickel, cobalt and manganese used in lithium-ion batteries.
Key benefits of the GEN3 Li-S Energy battery system over our second-generation (GEN2) lithium sulfur cells include: enhanced safety with the use of a low flammability electrolyte.
In a bid to bring this technology closer to commercialization, Australian listed company Li-S Energy has announced the development of its first 20-layer battery cells utilizing third-generation (GEN3) semi-solid state lithium sulfur battery technology.
The new 20-layer cells are built using a low-flammability electrolyte, which we believe will make them safer than traditional lithium sulfur and lithium-ion cells that utilise a higher flammability electrolyte.
