Many lithium battery chargers need to detect a voltage of around 5 volts or greater from the battery in order to charge it. However, when a LiFePO4 battery is in low voltage disconnect, it will usually read 5 volts or less. And the battery’s BMS needs to detect a charging voltage near its nominal voltage to wake up.
A 14.4V lithium battery has 4 cells. It must be charged with a "balanced" charger that senses and adjusts the amount of charge for each cell. Then the battery must have 5 wires.
Likewise with the 36V and 48V lithium batteries. When charging LiFePO4 batteries in series, it’s recommended to use a multi-bank battery charger that can charge each battery individually. If that’s not an option, you can also use a 24V battery LiFePO4 charger or a 48V battery LiFePO4 charger if you’d like to charge your system as a whole.
Only li-ion chargers with a voltage equal to that of the LiFePO4 can be considered identical. For example, a charger with a voltage range between 10v and 14.6v is required to completely charge a 12V LiFePO4 battery. You do not want to charge your LiFePO4 at a voltage higher or lower than the desired.
When charging LiFePO4 batteries in series, it’s recommended to use a multi-bank battery charger that can charge each battery individually. Brava lithium batteries support charging in series.
However, to optimize the performance of your LiFePO4 battery, to achieve a higher cycle life, and to avoid the BMS disconnecting the battery, we recommend limiting the discharge to 80%. If the BMS disconnects the battery due to low voltage, at 100% depth of discharge, remove the load and recharge using a LiFePO4 charger to reactivate the BMS.
A LiFePO4 battery reading an abnormally low voltage — such as 5 volts or less — has probably entered sleep mode, also called low voltage disconnect (LVD), to protect the cells from …
