Some conclusions and prospects are proposed about the future nickel metal supply for lithium-ion batteries, which is expected to provide guidance for nickel metal supply in the future, particularly in the application of high nickel cathodes in lithium-ion batteries.
This review presents the development stages of Ni-based cathode materials for second-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Due to their high volumetric and gravimetric capacity and high nominal voltage, nickel-based cathodes have many applications, from portable devices to electric vehicles.
The battery is predicted to hold more than twice as much energy per kilogram as lithium-ion batteries, and to be safer. However, the battery will be complex to manufacture and durability issues have yet to be resolved. [ 1] Ni–Li has a very high cell potential, but is limited in capacity by the cathode material.
Global suppliers of Li-ion battery cathode material are increasing production capacity of nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC), with a typical ratio of 33% for each element. With nickel-containing Li-ion battery use forecast to grow exponentially, end-of-life collection and recycling capacity is poised to grow to match.
The anodes of most lithium-ion batteries are made from graphite. Typically, the mineral composition of the cathode is what changes, making the difference between battery chemistries. The cathode material typically contains lithium along with other minerals including nickel, manganese, cobalt, or iron.
Subsequent generations have progressively increased the nickel content, such as in the case of NMC 811, which contains 80 % nickel, and the latest generation of NMC batteries, featuring a 90 % nickel cathode (Purwanto et al., 2022, Ghosh et al., 2021).
