The bulk of electricity generation in Sri Lanka is from grid-connected power plants. Table 4 11 gives the summary of electricity generation from grid-based and of-grid, conventional and non-conventional sources. Energy sources and energy demand are separated by vast swaths of time and space.
The primary energy supply of Sri Lanka consists of biomass, petroleum, coal, major hydro and new renewable energy. Table 3.1 summarises the contribution of supply energy forms by source. Biomass is the most widely available cooking fuel used by nearly half of the population in the domestic sector for cooking purposes.
Traditional biomass – the burning of charcoal, crop waste, and other organic matter – is not included. This can be an important source in lower-income settings. Sri Lanka: How much of the country’s electricity comes from nuclear power? Nuclear power – alongside renewables – is a low-carbon source of electricity.
As illustrated in Figure 5.3, the average selling price of an electricity unit in Sri Lanka increased over the time. The utilities reported that a total of 315 customers migrated to the Time of Use (ToU) tarif ofered to encourage at specific electricity use, as the peak time tarif was quite high.
The Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority managed to secure USD 108 million funding for improving energy eficiency in buildings from the World Bank and the Green Climate Fund, targeting HVAC and lighting improvements in aging buildings.
Since there are three major components in the electricity industry aggregate cost of all three components is the cost that consumer has to be paid through tariffs. The next question arises in case of cost estimation is “what Cost” and “How much” cost are to be amalgamated into the Tariffs.
