2.1. The revival of room-temperature sodium-ion batteries Due to the abundant sodium (Na) reserves in the Earth’s crust (Fig. 5 (a)) and to the similar physicochemical properties of sodium and lithium, sodium-based electrochemical energy storage holds significant promise for large-scale energy storage and grid development.
Sodium-ion batteries (NaIBs) were initially developed at roughly the same time as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in the 1980s; however, the limitations of charge/discharge rate, cyclability, energy density, and stable voltage profiles made them historically less competitive than their lithium-based counterparts .
Due to the wide availability and low cost of sodium resources, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are regarded as a promising alternative for next-generation large-scale EES systems.
As sodium-ion battery technology advances, it is emerging as a cost-effective alternative to lithium-ion batteries, paving the way for China's rapid expansion of large-scale centralized energy storage facilities.
This work also highlights some methodologies that have empowered the electrochemical performance of sodium-ion batteries in the past five years. It also concludes some emerging routes to enhance the overall performance of sodium-ion batteries, leading to a comparable performance with Li-ion batteries for future research.
