Energy storage technologies have various applications in daily life including home energy storage, grid balancing, and powering electric vehicles. Some of the main applications are: Pumped storage utilizes two water reservoirs at varying heights for energy storage.
This occurs when power system collapse, ancillary mechanisms failed and electricity supply resources are needed to be restarted without pulling electricity from the grid. This type of application requires an electrical energy storage technology which should be able to response quickly and devoid of any energy intensive auxiliary equipment.
They also intend to effect the potential advancements in storage of energy by advancing energy sources. Renewable energy integration and decarbonization of world energy systems are made possible by the use of energy storage technologies.
TES is one of the most promising techniques used for energy storage. TES can be achieved by using LHS and SHS. The efficiency of the various solar collectors was found to be increased by 8–37% by using LHS, and 7–30% was found to be increased by SHS compared with conventional solar thermal collectors.
Other technologies such as NaS, NaNiCl 2, flow batteries, Li-ion SMES, flywheel, supercapacitors are also developed and are commercially available but mainly in demonstration projects. Their application for large-scale energy storage is highly uncommon. HES, Zn-Air battery are in the developing stage with few demonstration plants in operation.
