Shell's scientists, researchers and engineers around the globe are working to develop, deploy and commercialise technologies that are vital in the transition to a low-carbon energy future. In 2023, we spent $1,287 million on research and development (R&D), compared with $1,067 million in 2022.
The first level includes two giant industries: Ningde and BYD, of which Ningde is the dominant one, accounting for (69.44 GWh) which was 52.1% of the domestic power battery market share in 2021, followed by BYD with (23.56 GWh) accounting for 16.2%.
Firstly, a portion of the power battery production is intended for export markets. Secondly, the output of NEVs does not align or same bring into line with the production of power batteries, resulting in a surplus of uninstalled batteries temporarily stored as inventory. Table 1.
At Shell, we have set up one of our largest technology development programs spanning 2022-2030 with the aim to decarbonise manufacturing with electricity. The program consists of five technology elements: electro-thermal, electro-chemical, heat and electricity storage, integrated process design, and digital electricity management.
In 2021, the production of NEVs reached 3.545 million units, with a corresponding sales volume of 3.521 million units in comparison to 2020, this shows an annual growth rate of over 150%. However, 2021 has seen a substantial rebound, with China's power battery output reaching 219.7 GWh, representing a year-over-year growth rate of over 150% and achieving a penetration rate of 163.4%.
