This overview of currently available safety standards for batteries for stationary battery energy storage systems shows that a number of standards exist that include some of the safety tests required by the Regulation concerning batteries and waste batteries, forming a good basis for the development of the regulatory tests.
In the energy storage battery standards, IEC 63056-2020 requires that the battery system discharge at the maximum specified current starting from 30% SOC. The test should be carried out until the BMS terminates the discharge. IEC 62619-2022 requires the test battery to be discharged at a discharge rate of 1 C for a test period of 90 min.
Unless otherwise specified in a device-specific test plan, charging should be performed at the reference temperature (30 ±3oC). The device should generally be at beginning of life (BOL) conditions for this test and other tests shall not be performed at these storage temperature limits. HPPC.
For the performance test, a constant current method is generally used where a constant current specified by the manufacturer is applied for an accompanying specified time. Battery manufacturers publish tables that include different discharge rates specified for different periods of time.
Although many tests can be performed to assess the condition of the batteries such as ohmic testing, specific gravity, state of charge etc., only the capacity test, commonly referred to as the discharge or load test, can measure the true capacity of the battery system and in turn determine the state of heath of the batteries.
IEC 62619-2022 requires the test battery to be discharged at a discharge rate of 1 C for a test period of 90 min. In UL 1973-2022 , the test battery is discharged with the maximum discharge current for an additional 30 min after reaching the lower limit of the normal discharge voltage.
