Thermal energy storage (TES) is increasingly important due to the demand-supply challenge caused by the intermittency of renewable energy and waste heat dissipation to the environment. This paper discusses the fundamentals and novel applications of TES materials and identifies appropriate TES materials for particular applications.
An in-depth understanding of the specific effect of material properties is needed to enhance the performance of thermal energy storage systems. In this paper, we used fitting models and regression analysis to quantify the effect that latent heat of melting and material density have on the overall heat absorption.
The development of advanced materials and systems for thermal energy storage is crucial for integrating renewable energy sources into the grid, as highlighted by the U.S. Department of Energy's Thermal Energy Storage Technology Strategy Assessment.
The article presents different methods of thermal energy storage including sensible heat storage, latent heat storage and thermochemical energy storage, focusing mainly on phase change materials (PCMs) as a form of suitable solution for energy utilisation to fill the gap between demand and supply to improve the energy efficiency of a system .
Thermal energy storage system Renewable energy systems require energy storage, and TES is used for heating and cooling applications . Unlike photovoltaic units, solar systems predominantly harness the Sun's thermal energy and have distinct efficiencies. However, they rely on a radiation source for thermal support.
One main research gap in thermal energy storage systems is the development of effective and efficient storage materials and systems. Research has highlighted the need for advanced materials with high energy density and thermal conductivity to improve the overall performance of thermal energy storage systems . 4.4.2. Limitations
