Expansion machines are designed for various compressed air energy storage systems and operations. An efficient compressed air storage system will only be materialised when the appropriate expanders and compressors are chosen. The performance of compressed air energy storage systems is centred round the efficiency of the compressors and expanders.
Research has shown that isentropic efficiency for compressors as well as expanders are key determinants of the overall characteristics and efficiency of compressed air energy storage systems . Compressed air energy storage systems are sub divided into three categories: diabatic CAES systems, adiabatic CAES systems and isothermal CAES systems.
This system boosts overall cycle efficiency from around 42% up to around 54%. Table 5 summarises the differences between the two compressed air storage systems. Table 5.
The compressors- one of the key components of compressed air energy storage systems operate using prime movers, such as motors [, ]. These compressors pressurize air as it starts its journey into the storage cavern .
The round tip efficiency of Isothermal compressed air energy storage system is high compared to that of other compressed air energy storage systems. The temperature produced during compression as well as expansion for isothermal compressed air energy storage is deduced from heat transfer, with the aid of moisture in air.
There are several compression and expansion stages: from the charging, to the discharging phases of the storage system. Research has shown that isentropic efficiency for compressors as well as expanders are key determinants of the overall characteristics and efficiency of compressed air energy storage systems .
