The designed solar energy system has a capacity of 60 kWp, producing 75 MWh of usable energy annually. This system uses 66% of the energy available from the sun to generate electricity which covers the electrical demand of Brunei’s residences.
At the moment, there is no regulatory governing the installation of solar panel in Brunei. Companies follow international standards for solar PV systems that convert solar energy into electrical energy, as well as for all the elements in the entire system.
With the abundance of oil & natural gas resources, the country has one of the cheapest electricity costs in the world. This would in turn make solar power underutilized. The purpose of this project is to design a solar system for Brunei’s medium sized residence to meet the daily energy demands.
Cabling and trenching works can be very costly due to the installation and maintenance process. Hence, for landscaping and outdoor lightings, solar is the cheaper and more convenient option. How can I maximize solar energy production in Brunei?
Off-grid system usually requires batteries, while hybrid system does not necessarily require battery. Typically at the moment, residential installation of solar cost about B$3000 – B$4000 per kilowatt for hybrid system and B$8000 – B$9000 per kilowatt for off grid system. Maintenance is negligible unless there are replacement parts required.
In Brunei Darussalam the fate of PV technology is either to be used as a substitute or add up power facility by the Government to the national grid or as a standalone system for only small scale applications like lighting, road/street lights, traffic signals, emergency/security lights, bay lights.
