These roofs can utilize either building material-integrated photovoltaics or standalone photovoltaic installations to achieve their energy-saving objectives . Since the 1970s, numerous developed countries have pioneered the integration of photovoltaic components onto building rooftops.
To improve overall building efficiency, rooftop photovoltaic cooling technologies have diversified. Photovoltaic-thermal (PV/T) systems achieve dual energy utilization by capturing the heat dissipated by photovoltaic modules for building heating.
Their incorporation into building roofs remains hampered by the inherent optical and thermal properties of commercial solar cells, as well as by esthetic, economic, and social constraints. This study reviews research publications on rooftop photovoltaic systems from building to city scale.
Rooftop PV adopters in these energy communities are effectively credited for exported PV output at self-consumption rates, while non-adopters benefit from buying community rooftop PV output at lower rates than grid electricity.
