The second stage battery equipment will be supplied by Finnish technology group Wärtsilä using their next-generation energy storage system (ESS), the Quantum High Energy (QuantumHE). Wärtsilä says the QuantumHE provides increased energy density while lowering equipment costs, expediting the development process and reducing maintenance requirements.
The combined energy storage of the stage one and stage two batteries will be over 2 GWh enabling Origin to help keep the grid stable and support more variable renewable energy coming into the system.
The second stage will add a 240 MW / 1,030 MWh four-hour duration grid-forming BESS to the 460 MW / 1,073 MWh two-hour duration first stage battery development already under construction, which is anticipated to come online at the end of the 2025 calendar year.
National Grid plugs TagEnergy’s 100MW battery project in at its Drax substation. Following energisation, the facility in North Yorkshire is the UK’s largest transmission connected battery energy storage system (BESS). The facility is supporting Britain’s clean energy transition, and helping to ensure secure operation of the electricity system.
The Eraring Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project area is about 25 ha, which is located within the southern portion of the EPS site. The Eraring BESS will include: Rows of enclosures housing lithium-ion type batteries connected to associated power conversion systems (PCS) and high voltage (HV) electrical reticulation equipment.
A battery storage project developed by TagEnergy is now connected and energised on the electricity transmission network, following work by National Grid to plug the facility into its 132kV Drax substation in North Yorkshire.
