What is the construction of a lead acid battery cell?

The construction of a lead acid battery cell is as shown in Fig. 1. It consists of the following parts : Anode or positive terminal (or plate). Cathode or negative terminal (or plate). Electrolyte. Separators. Anode or positive terminal (or plate): The positive plates are also called as anode. The material used for it is lead peroxide (PbO 2).

How does lead sulfate affect a battery?

The lead within a battery is mechanically active. On discharge, the lead sulfate causes the plates to expand, a movement that reverses during charge when the plates contract again. Over time, sulfite crystals form that cause shedding of lead material.

How do you increase the surface area of a lead-acid battery?

Since the capacity of a lead-acid battery is proportional to the surface area of the electrodes that is exposed to the electrolyte, various schemes are employed to increase the surface area of the electrodes per unit volume or weight. Plant plates are grooved or perforated to increase their surface area. A typical plant plate is shown below.

What is active material bonded to a battery?

A paste of what's referred to as "active material" is then bonded to the plates; sponge lead for the negative plates, and lead dioxide for the positive. This active material is where the chemical reaction with the sulfuric acid takes place when an electrical load is placed across the battery terminals.

What happens at a positive battery terminal?

At the positive battery terminal, the electrons rush back in and are accepted by the positive plates. The oxygen in the active material (lead dioxide) reacts with the hydrogen ions to form water, and the lead reacts with the sulfuric acid to form lead sulfate.

What causes lead shedding in a battery?

Lead shedding is a natural phenomenon that can only be slowed and not eliminated. The terminals of a battery can also corrode. This is often visible with the formation of white powder as a result of oxidation between two different metals connecting the poles. Terminal corrosion can eventually lead to an open electrical connection.
