What are optocouplers & opto-isolators?

Optocouplers and opto-isolators can be used on their own, or to switch a range of other larger electronic devices such as transistors and triacs providing the required electrical isolation between a lower voltage control signal, for example one from an Arduino or micro-controller, and a much higher voltage or mains current output signal.

What are the isolation characteristics of optocouplers?

A: The isolation characteristics of optocouplers are specified in different forms. There are values defined in Isolation rating (VISO), maximum transient isolation voltage (VIOTM) and maximum working voltage (VIORM). These are the most common definitions together with the DTI which is the minimum distance through the insulation barrier.

What is the difference between an optocoupler and a transistor?

A: The input of optocouplers is defined with the forward current IF of the emitting diode and the reverse voltage which should not be exceeded. The transistor on the output is defined by the collector current IC and the voltage across the collector and emitter pins VCE.

What is an optocoupler used for?

An Optocoupler, is an electronic components that interconnects two separate electrical circuits by means of a light sensitive optical interface. The Optocoupler is an electronic component which can be used in many different applications as an interface between low voltage digital or control circuits and large power electronic devices.

Can an optocoupler drive a led?

A: A basic full-wave rectifier and modest filtering can be used to drive the LED of the optocoupler, with appropriate current scaling via a basic resistor or even a real current source, Figure 6:

What is the saturation voltage of a Vishay optocoupler?

Vishay optocouplers are typically specified with a saturation voltage VCE,sat of 0.25 V which can range up to a maximum of 0.4 V. 8. Q: HOW IS AN OPTOCOUPLER WITH A BASE CONNECTION USED? A: Optocouplers with a base connection enable to externally control the base.
