China’s solar panel domestic industry is in upheaval. PHOTO: NYTIMES CHANGSHA – Over the past 15 years, China has come to dominate the global market for solar energy. Nearly every solar panel on the planet is made by a Chinese company. Even the equipment to manufacture solar panels is made almost entirely in China.
REUTERS/Stringer/File Photo Purchase Licensing Rights SHANGHAI, June 12 (Reuters) - Chinese solar panel manufacturers said they are seeking immediate government intervention to curb investment and industry collaboration to arrest a plunge in prices of solar cells and modules, as the industry faces overcapacity.
As discussed in the previous sections, China was able to dominate the solar industry market. Incentives and government subsidies dating from 2009 onwards helped secure the lead in the world for solar power production since 2017 (Liu et al., 2022; Chowdhury et al., 2020).
But China’s solar panel domestic industry is in upheaval. Wholesale prices plummeted by almost half in 2023 and have fallen another 25 per cent in 2024. Chinese manufacturers are competing for customers by cutting prices far below their costs, and still keep building more factories.
As can be seen, China leads the production of the essence of solar PVs, the wafers, as around 98 % of wafers are produced in China. Although not threatening, China's main competitors are Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand (IRENA, 2022a). China is also responsible for producing more than 75 % of the cells, and the final PVs.
China’s solar industry is dominant across every stage of the global supply chain, from the polysilicon to the finished product. Module production capacity in the country reached roughly 1,000 gigawatts (GW) last year, almost five times that of the rest of the world combined, according to Wood Mackenzie, a consultancy.
