Low ESR capacitors have lower power losses and internal heating issues than high ESR capacitors. High ESR values shorten the life of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor and reduce performance. Furthermore, a low ESR value enables increased ripple current capacity.
The problem is that when the capacitor is shorted its ESR will be almost 0Ω, and a basic ESR meter will tell us that the capacitor is perfect. For this reason, we should not only measure the ESR in order to judge a capacitor as good, but we should also measure its capacitance and continuity with a multimeter.
If measuring capacitors connected in parallel, the ESR reading will effectively be the value of all the ESRs in parallel, not just the ESR of the capacitor in contact with the probes. The expected value of ESR largely depends on the capacitance value and the voltage rating of the capacitor but also depends on temperature ratings and other factors.
Higher ESR creates more ripple at the output, impacting the stability of the control loop. ESR is especially essential in low-duty-cycle, high-frequency current pulse applications. ESR values for ceramic capacitors are typically stated between 0.01 and 0.1 ohms.
