Onori and her colleagues determined, however, that this is not an ideal approach for predicting the life expectancy of EV batteries — a find of particular importance, since batteries still account for about a third the of price of a new EV.
If this 1.8 percent annual degradation continued in a linear fashion, after 10 years an EV would still have 82 percent of its battery capacity, much more than the 70 percent most batteries are warrantied for after eight years. Dial that forward 20 years and the car would still have 64 percent.
They then evaluated 92 commercial lithium-ion batteries for more than two years across these profiles. The more realistic the profiles, the higher the EV life expectancy rose, according to the study.
“Batteries in the latest EV models will comfortably outlast the usable life of the vehicle and will likely not need to be replaced.” That’s what David Savage, Vice President for the UK and Ireland at Geotab said in the company’s latest study that looked at how EV batteries degrade over time.
Geotab is a Canada-based fleet management company that, among other things, analyzes telematics data from electric vehicles. In 2019, the firm reported that EV batteries degrade by 2.3% on average every year. Now, though, there’s a new study that shows things are even better.
Battery scientists and engineers have typically tested the cycles of new batteries in laboratories, using a constant rate of discharge, followed by recharge, the authors explained. They then repeat this approach many times to learn if a new design could benefit the battery’s longevity.
