Capacitor Unit Upon the capacitor failure, the fuse removes the affected element only. The other elements, connected in parallel in the same group, remain in service but with a slightly higher voltage across them. Shunt capacitor banks usually consist of multiple units in series, which are connected as double star ungrounded.
Capacitor Banks are installed to provide capacitive reactive compensation and power factor correction. A capacitor unit is the building block of any shunt capacitor bank. The capacitor unit is made up of individual capacitor elements, arranged in parallel/series connected groups.
However, when the SCBs are not controllable using a power factor regulator system, reactive power overcompensation can occur under some operation conditions, i.e., when some of loads are out of service. For instance, in the system under study, four motors connected to the bus A2 may sometimes be out of service while the SCB is connected to the bus.
Switching the capacitor sets considerably increases the SCB failure rate due to SCB switching transients. Applying a protective scheme to disconnect the SCBs when self-excitation is detected and before considerable overvoltage appears. This approach, which is discussed in the next section, allows the system to operate even with a lead power factor.
Ionizing damage has been usually reported as the most important concern in MOS devices, setting aside the consequences of displacement damage on their substrates. However, displacement effects can play a relevant role in the device performance, even for such a simple device as a MOS capacitor.
In short circuit situation of a capacitor element, if relative fuse is not operated, all elements in parallel in same group will be shorted. The remaining series capacitor elements in the unit remain in service with a higher voltage across each of them. It changes the capacitance value and can result in tripping unbalance relay.
