One difficult thing about developing better batteries is that the technology is still poorly understood. Changing one part of a battery—say, by introducing a new electrode—can produce unforeseen problems, some of which can’t be detected without years of testing.
Batteries can unlock other energy technologies, and they’re starting to make their mark on the grid. This article is from The Spark, MIT Technology Review ’s weekly climate newsletter. The new discovery — which the scientists say was unintended and builds off novel electronics work — could be the foundation for better battery life across consumer devices such as laptops or smartphones, as well as more flexibility in grid-scale energy storage.
While countless breakthroughs have been announced over the last decade, time and again these advances failed to translate into commercial batteries. One difficult thing about developing better batteries is that the technology is still poorly understood.
Solid-state batteries have faced longstanding basic technology challenges. One is the difficulty of maintaining battery performance and avoiding failure since repeated charges and discharges cause the formation of dendrites, bunches of lithium, which can lead to cracking. Another challenge is enabling a stable contact between solid materials.
But these batteries have even higher rates of self-discharge, which is when the battery’s internal chemical reactions reduce stored energy and degrade its capacity over time. Because of self-discharge, most EV batteries have a lifespan of seven to 10 years before they need to be replaced.
