The most effective way to measure isolated leakage current is by breaking the isolation of a complete system with a known resistance. If there is no current flowing between the switched path, then there is no parallel path which indicates that system is safe without any isolation breakages.
Here is a simple, chargeable leakage and continuity tester that can be operated in two modes: normal mode and gain mode. The gain mode is especially useful for detecting small leakages in electrolytic capacitors or large resistors, which can’t be detected by ordinary continuity testers without amplification of the continuity current.
Leakage current can be calculated with both isolation error voltage and resistance. When only S1 is closed, the HV_Batt - Vref - Viso voltage is confirmed to be across resistors Riso , Rps1, and Rps2 (neglect bias currents); leakage current can be measured from ISO_POS.
Use a transparent red LED (LED1) for easy detection of continuity. To check the leakage, flip S1 towards gain mode, clip the alligator clip to one terminal of the component under test, and touch the probe to the other terminal of the component. If LED1 glows, it indicates leakage. Similarly, to check continuity, flip S1 towards normal mode.
Measurement of the applied part leakage current shall be performed on equipment. For TYPE-B applied parts usually no separate measurement is necessary, measurements are encompassed in the equipment leakage measurement.
Alternatively, touch method or patient method derived from IEC 60601-1 may be used. Equipment under testing shall be measured in the operating conditions. Note 1: This table does not provide allowable values for equipment producing D.C. leakage currents. Note 2: Certain standards can allow different values of leakage current.
