Performance and Durability Requirements (Article 10) Article 10 of the regulation mandates that from 18 August 2024, rechargeable industrial batteries with a capacity exceeding 2 kWh, LMT batteries, and EV batteries must be accompanied by detailed technical documentation.
IEEE 1725-2021: IEEE Standard For Rechargeable Batteries For Mobile Phones establishes criteria for design analysis of rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for cellular telephone applications. What Is the Rule about Lithium Batteries on Airplanes?
Battery cells or battery modules made available for end use without further incorporation or assembly into larger battery packs or batteries will be regarded as batteries under the regulation, subject to the requirements for the most similar battery category.
These include performance and durability requirements for industrial batteries, electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and light means of transport (LMT) batteries; safety standards for stationary battery energy storage systems (SBESS); and information requirements on SOH and expected lifetime.
Purpose: The purpose of this standard is to ensure reliable user experience and operation of cell phone batteries. The battery and cellular telephone industries need standardized criteria for design and qualification of rechargeable battery systems and for verifying the quality and reliability of those batteries.
Rechargeable battery types include lead-acid, lithium-ion, nickel-metal hydride, and nickel-cadmium batteries. In 2018, lead-acid batteries (LABs) provided approximately 72 % of global rechargeable battery capacity (in gigawatt hours).
