How do lithium ion batteries work?

All lithium-ion batteries work in broadly the same way. When the battery is charging up, the lithium-cobalt oxide, positive electrode gives up some of its lithium ions, which move through the electrolyte to the negative, graphite electrode and remain there. The battery takes in and stores energy during this process.

What is the construction of a lithium ion battery?

The construction of a lithium ion battery is one of the most important aspects that determine its performance and lifespan. Essentially, a lithium ion battery consists of several components including electrodes, electrolyte, separator and casing. The two electrodes used in lithium-ion batteries are typically made from metal oxide or graphite.

What's new in lithium-ion battery technology?

Article by Akshat Rathi outlines new development in lithium-ion battery technology: the addition of silicon to the batteries. Now You Know video (5:10 min.) discussing the materials used in EV (electric vehicle) batteries and the mathematics behind electric vehicle adoption.

What are lithium-ion batteries used for?

If you've read our main article on batteries, you'll know a battery is essentially a chemical experiment happening in a small metal canister.

Do lithium ion batteries use elemental lithium?

That’s why lithium-ion batteries don’t use elemental lithium. Instead, lithium-ion batteries typically contain a lithium-metal oxide, such as lithium-cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2). This supplies the lithium-ions. Lithium-metal oxides are used in the cathode and lithium-carbon compounds are used in the anode.
