Mechanical characterization of Li-ion battery cells is becoming increasingly important as the community becomes more aware that the underlying mechanisms of battery failure and degradation involve the complex interplay between electrochemistry and mechanics.
Following the ASTM standards, we performed four-point bending simulations on battery cells to determine the testing specifications. The distance between the two static noses D S is 180 mm (24 times of cell thickness), and four different distances between the two loading noses D L are compared.
Taking into consideration the importance of this issue, it is advisable that future standardisation/regulation developments consider a harmonized testing guidance and protocols to ensure that chemical hazards of automotive batteries are appropriately assessed in order to ensure the safety of vehicle occupants and surrounding persons.
As we concluded in a previous publication , the mechanical behavior of a battery cell is largely governed by the graphite coating layers instead of the current collectors, cathode coating, or separator. The graphite coating is porous and less anisotropic in mechanical responses than the overall layered structure.
