8.1. Introduction Grid-scale energy storage has the potential to transform the electric grid to a flexible adaptive system that can easily accommodate intermittent and variable renewable energy, and bank and redistribute energy from both stationary power plants and from electric vehicles (EVs).
Grid energy storage, also known as large-scale energy storage, are technologies connected to the electrical power grid that store energy for later use. These systems help balance supply and demand by storing excess electricity from variable renewables such as solar and inflexible sources like nuclear power, releasing it when needed.
E nergy storage for the electrical grid is about to hit the big time. By the reckoning of the International Energy Agency (iea), a forecaster, grid-scale storage is now the fastest-growing of all the energy technologies. In 2025, some 80 gigawatts (gw) of new grid-scale energy storage will be added globally, an eight-fold increase from 2021.
Grid-scale battery storage is a mature and fast-growing industry with demand reaching 123 gigawatt-hours last year. There are a total of 5,000 installations across the world. In the first quarter of 2024, more than 200 grid-scale projects entered operation, according to Rho Motion, with the largest a 1.3GWh project in Saudi Arabia.
It has also led to large-scale production facilities (gigawatt factories) for energy storage, which promises to achieve reduction in costs similar to those seen in solar photovoltaic industry. The focus of this report is on energy storage for the power grid in support of larger penetration of renewable energy.
Research is largely concentrated in Europe and the United States, whereas grid-scale storage manufacturers are typically located in China and South Korea. The main markets for deployment of electricity grid-scale storage technologies are expected to occur most significantly in China, South Korea, and South and Southeast Asia.
