Liquid cooling is typically used in today's commercial vehicles, which can effectively reduce the battery temperature. However, it has some shortcomings in maintaining temperature uniformity and other aspects and thus needs further improvement. Using phase change material (PCM) coupled with liquid cooling is a promising choice.
Direct liquid cooling has the potential to achieve the desired battery performance under normal as well as extreme operating conditions. However, extensive research still needs to be executed to commercialize direct liquid cooling as an advanced battery thermal management technique in EVs.
With the increasing application of the lithium-ion battery, higher requirements are put forward for battery thermal management systems. Compared with other cooling methods, liquid cooling is an efficient cooling method, which can control the maximum temperature and maximum temperature difference of the battery within an acceptable range.
It was found that the cooling performance of the system increased with the increase of contact surface angle and inlet liquid flow rate. For the preheating study of the battery system at subzero temperature, they found that a larger gradient angle increment was beneficial to improve the temperature uniformity.
A liquid or air cooling system must manage this elevated heat without compromising safety or performance. Fast charging also demands cooling systems capable of rapidly dissipating generated heat to prevent overheating, a factor that could undermine battery longevity and safety.
Simulation model validations with experimental results.
