First Cobalt Produces Battery Grade Cobalt Sulfate TORONTO, ON — (April 3, 2019) – First Cobalt Corp. (TSX-V: FCC; ASX: FCC; OTCQX: FTSSF) (the “Company”) today announced it has successfully produced a battery grade cobalt sulfate using the First Cobalt Refinery flowsheet.
About First Cobalt2 First Cobalt is a Canadian-based pure-play cobalt company and owner of the only permitted primary cobalt refinery in North America. The Company is studying a restart of the First Cobalt Refinery in Ontario, Canada, which could produce 2,000 tonnes of cobalt sulfate or metallic cobalt per year.
Given the abundance of this higher grade material in the market, the Company has been testing third party cobalt hydroxide as an alternative source of feed. Today’s results confirm that the existing processes in the First Cobalt Refinery are indeed capable of producing a high purity, battery grade cobalt sulfate.
Although end-of-life (EOL) batteries are estimated to become a significant source of secondary cobalt in the future, recycled cobalt alone will not be nearly enough to satisfy the increasing demand during the next decade (Alves Dias et al. 2018 ).
Massive fluctuations in cobalt prices were seen between 2018 and 2019, due to which the GHGs allocated to cobalt sulfate were nearly twice as high in 2018 than in 2019: for the 2018 reference, the GWP of the High As case was 10.3, whereas the value was 6.0 kg CO 2 -eq for 2019.
Purpose The soaring demand for cobalt for lithium-ion batteries has increased interest in the utilization of non-conventional cobalt sources. Such raw materials include complex ores containing minerals such as cobaltite and skutterudite, which, while rare, occur around the world, including in Finland, Canada, and the USA.
