Introduction to Batteries Course Description:There is a great deal of interest in batteries today, particularly in lithium-ion batteries. This tutorial is one of five in a series developed by Robert Spotnitz, President of Battery Design, LLC.
Primary batteries are cost-effective, lightweight, and require little maintenance. They are mainly used in household appliances and typically consist of a single cylindrical cell, although they can be made in various shapes and sizes. These include older batteries like alkaline, zinc-carbon, and mercury-containing batteries.
This book is a concise guide to the key areas in the field of batteries, an important area for applications in renewable energy storage, transportation, and consumer devices; provides a rapid understanding of batteries and the scientific and engineering concepts and principles behind the technology.
There are two main types of batteries: disposable and rechargeable (see Figure 2). Between these two battery types, there are many battery chemistries that dictate parameters, such as capacity, voltage, and energy density. Disposable batteries are batteries that can only be used once, then must be replaced after they have been fully discharged.
One is “chemical batteries” which generate electricity through chemical reactions between metallic compounds and such like. Another is “physical batteries” which generate electricity through solar or thermal energy. Let’s look at “chemical batteries” here.
