This mini-review discusses the recent trends in electrode materials for Li-ion batteries. Elemental doping and coatings have modified many of the commonly used electrode materials, which are used either as anode or cathode materials. This has led to the high diffusivity of Li ions, ionic mobility and conductivity apart from specific capacity.
Li ion batteries typically use lithium as the material at the positive electrode, and graphite at the negative electrode. The lithium-ion battery presents clear fundamental technology advantages when compared to alternative cell chemistries like lead acid.
Several new electrode materials have been invented over the past 20 years, but there is, as yet, no ideal system that allows battery manufacturers to achieve all of the requirements for vehicular applications.
More recently, nickel demand has increased for use in lithium-ion batteries, and as some battery chemistries trend toward a greater quantity of nickel versus other battery materials, the need is likely to grow further still.
