In this section, the characteristics of the various types of batteries used for large scale energy storage, such as the lead–acid, lithium-ion, nickel–cadmium, sodium–sulfur and flow batteries, as well as their applications, are discussed. 2.1. Lead–acid batteries
Large-scale battery storage technologies can be a practical way to maximize the contribution of variable renewable electricity generation sources (particularly wind and solar).
Lithium-ion batteries are devices that can store electricity in chemical form. They incorporate different metals and chemicals depending on what they are to be used for. They are very good at absorbing and releasing energy very quickly — think of the swift acceleration of an electric vehicle.
Among several prevailing battery technologies, li-ion batteries demonstrate high energy efficiency, long cycle life, and high energy density. Efforts to mitigate the frequent, costly, and catastrophic impacts of climate change can greatly benefit from the uptake of batteries as energy storage systems (see Fig. 1).
