Tests to determine the performance of stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) systems and for verifying PV system design are presented in this recommended practice. These tests apply only to complete systems with a defined load.
DESIGN & SIZING PRINCIPLES Appropriate system design and component sizing is fundamental requirement for reliable operation, better performance, safety and longevity of solar PV system. The sizing principles for grid connected and stand-alone PV systems are based on different design and functional requirements.
Solar PV cells are devices that convert sunlight into electricity. They are made from silicon (Si), which is a semiconductor material that can absorb light and generate electric current. There are two main categories of solar PV cells: monocrystalline and polycrystalline.
At least three regulatory levels for the production, installation, operation and end of life of photovoltaic systems can be considered. Additionally, the Life Cycle Assessment methodology is also regulated by standards. In this chapter, the three levels are presented.
SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS There are two main configurations of Solar PV systems: Grid-connected (or grid-tied) and Off-grid (or standalone) solar PV systems. In a grid-connected PV system, the PV array is directly connected to the grid-connected inverter without a storage battery.
