Compared to previous designs of on-land solar stills, floating solar still adopts an interface evaporation technology to separate the light absorbing material from the water, thus achieving a higher yielding efficiency ( Fig. 2 b from [ 35 ]). The still only heats a thin layer of water formed on the black fabric.
Floating solar or floating photovoltaics (FPV), sometimes called floatovoltaics, are solar panels mounted on a structure that floats on a body of water, typically a reservoir or a lake such as drinking water reservoirs, quarry lakes, irrigation canals or remediation and tailing ponds.
By harnessing the synergy of water and photovoltaics, floating solar mounting systems not only optimize unused water surfaces but also enhance the efficiency of solar panels by cooling them.
1. The Concept of Floating Solar Panels and Their Advantages Floating solar panels, also known as floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems, are solar power installations mounted on water bodies like lakes, reservoirs, and ponds. Unlike traditional systems, they float on water surfaces, offering several distinct advantages:
American, Danish, French, Italian and Japanese nationals were the first to register patents for floating solar. In Italy the first registered patent regarding PV modules on water goes back to February 2008.

Floating solar or floating photovoltaics (FPV), sometimes called floatovoltaics, are solar panels mounted on a structure that floats. The structures that hold the solar panels usually consist of plastic buoys and cables. They are then placed on a body of water. Typically, these bodies of water are reservoirs, quarry lakes, irrigation canals or remediation and tailing ponds.
