Capacitor data sheets are usually available on manufacturer’s website. Alternatively, you can soon easily download any capacitor data sheet from here. It is important to double check the model number and date of publication to make sure that you are using the right data sheet.
The nominal value of the Capacitance, C of a capacitor is the most important of all capacitor characteristics. This value measured in pico-Farads (pF), nano-Farads (nF) or micro-Farads (μF) and is marked onto the body of the capacitor as numbers, letters or coloured bands.
In case of doubt, stricter reference conditions are defined in sub-clause 5.2 of the same specification. Prior to being measured, a capacitor must be stored under measuring conditions until the entire capacitor has reached the measuring temperature and humidity.
Smaller ceramic capacitors can have a nominal value as low as one pico-Farad, ( 1pF ) while larger electrolytic’s can have a nominal capacitance value of up to one Farad, ( 1F ). All capacitors have a tolerance rating that can range from -20% to as high as +80% for aluminium electrolytic’s affecting its actual or real value.
Voltage This is one of the key parameters to consider when selecting a capacitor for your application. For most types of capacitors, manufacturers specify voltage characteristics in terms of rated voltage, surge voltage, operating voltage, transient voltage, reverse voltage, and ripple voltage.
In most data sheets, the impedance characteristics of a capacitor are usually provided in form of performance curves. Dissipation factor (tanδ) This electrical parameter describes the relationship between the effective power and the reactive power when a sinusoidal voltage is applied to a component.
