Lithium-ion (LI) and lead-acid (LA) batteries have shown useful applications for energy storage system in a microgrid. The specific energy density (energy per unit mass) is more for LI battery whereas it is lower in case of LA battery.
Lead batteries are very well established both for automotive and industrial applications and have been successfully applied for utility energy storage but there are a range of competing technologies including Li-ion, sodium-sulfur and flow batteries that are used for energy storage.
Life cycle assessment of lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries is performed. Three lithium-ion battery chemistries (NCA, NMC, and LFP) are analysed. NCA battery performs better for climate change and resource utilisation. NMC battery is good in terms of acidification potential and particular matter.
Finally, for the minerals and metals resource use category, the lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP) is the best performer, 94% less than lead-acid. So, in general, the LIB are determined to be superior to the lead-acid batteries in terms of the chosen cradle-to-grave environmental impact categories.
A battery is an energy storage device. Here the lead–acid battery's working theory is discussed. It's rare in the world of rechargeable or secondary batteries. The positive plate contains lead dioxide (PbO 2), the negative plate contains sponge lead (Pb), and the electrolyte is dilute sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4).
The LIB outperform the lead-acid batteries. Specifically, the NCA battery chemistry has the lowest climate change potential. The main reasons for this are that the LIB has a higher energy density and a longer lifetime, which means that fewer battery cells are required for the same energy demand as lead-acid batteries.
