The principle of sensor operation is based on the overall block diagram of the real-time capacitive sensor system shown in Fig. 5. During the measurement, when the sensor electrodes are immersed in the liquid, the liquid level is linearly converted to the corresponding capacitance signal at the same time.
The novel results in the field of measurements of very small capacitance changes are presented. The operating principles like double differential principle, RC phase delay, charging and discharging, oscillator, capacitance to phase angle conversion used for measuring very small capacitance changes are discussed.
The investigation focuses on the capacitance range from 1 pF–1 nF, as this range is common for many capacitive sensors’ applications. Most capacitance-to-voltage measurement circuits employ a current-to-voltage conversion circuit (s. Fig. 3 (a)), which is called trans-impedance amplifiers (TIA), a current sensing circuit, or a current transducer.
The basic and most important parameters of measurements are dealt with measurement range, sensitivity, percentage error and applications where it can be used. The aim is to provide an elaborative summary on various methods and their parameters available for capacitance measurement.
At the heart of this development are the sensing methods themselves, the process by which capacitance is measured and converted into digital values that can be processed, manipulated and interpreted. Charge Transfer, Successive Approximation, Sigma-Delta, and Mutual Capacitance Measurement are the most commonly used sensing methods.
